REV. DR. LEROY ATTLES, SR.
After 32 years of service, Rev. Dr. LeRoy Attles officially retired from the St. Paul A.M.E. church delivering his final sermon on Sunday, June 7, 2009. The church community, along with the Cambridge and Boston communities, and many friends and family honored Rev. Attles at a banquet on Saturday, June 6, 2009 paying tribute to him and Dr. Henrietta Attles for their work and dedication to St. Paul.
Rev. Attles has led the St. Paul A.M.E. church congregation with extraordinary vision. His recently released book A Servant’s Testimony of God’s Faithfulness, an autobiography that depicts his story and the way that the Holy Spirit has used him during his time at St. Paul. Rev.
Through his leadership, a number of far reaching foundations have been established, and include The Hildebrand Family Self-Help Center, founded in 1983 provides shelter for homeless families and for those in need. It currently serves more than 100 families within its various programs and operates with a yearly budget of 3.5 million dollars. Two buildings were converted to accommodate 14 homeless families. A 12-unit apartment house is operated for moderate-income tenants, and 5 units of affordable housing for low-income families have been completed. The food pantry, one of the largest in the City of Cambridge, now serves more than 100 families weekly. The Christian Life Center, dedicated in 1988, is a multifaceted, community complex serving thousands of individuals, organizations, and agencies. The Tree of Life Bookstore is located in the Center. The Henry Buckner School, a nationally accredited elementary school with a preschool and infant toddler program, where more the one hundred children receive Christian-based, high quality education each year.
Rev. Dr. LeRoy Attles has led more than 125 men and women who received their ministertal callings under the tutelage of Rev. Attles. Many of them are pasturing nationally and internationally throughout the A.M.E. church.
He provides field education supervision to graduate students at Boston University School of Theology, Boston College, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Harvard Divinity School.
As a past member of the Board of Trustees of Andover-Newton Theological Seminary, Pastor Attles serves on the Advisory Committee. He is also Vice-President of the Cambridge Black Pastors Conference, was Vice-President of the Black Ministerial Alliance, and is a Director of the Black Church Capacity Building Program. He also serves on the Boards of the Suffolk County Sheriffs Industry Council and the Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Working Group. He is author of “The A.M.E. Youth of the Year Contest,” an innovative approach to the Christian education of young people and is the author of “Money Talk,” encouraging and explaining the importance of stewardship and “The Fruit of the Spirit,” outlining Christian growth and development.
Active service to church and community has marked Pastor Attles’ career in the ministry. During 15 years in the New Jersey Annual Conference, he has pastored at four different churches and provided guidance and leadership as Secretary of the New Jersey Annual Conference and as Director of Christian Education. Since coming to the New England Conference, Pastor Attles has served as Chairman of the Board of Examiners for the New England Annual Conference, as President of the Institute for Ministerial Training, and as Vice Chairman of the First Episcopal District Board of Christian Education.
The Rev. Dr. LeRoy Attles, Sr. is a native of Newark, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio, Pivotal life events occurred at Wilberforce where he accepted the call to the Christian ministry and met his wife, Henrietta. He studied at Payne Theological Seminary and the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He earned his master of Arts degree at Kane University in Union, New Jersey, His doctoral degree in the of sociology and Education was conferred on him by Rutgers University.
Rev. Attles and Dr. Henrietta S. Attles are the proud parents of Reverend Kanice Johns, Pastor of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Norristown, PA; LeRoy Attles, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; and Reverend Dr. Louis P. Attles, Pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Rahway, New Jersey. They have eight grandchildgren. Rev. and Mrs. Attles will be relocating to Florida at the end of the summer.
